Sticking with the same theme as our last post about more Japanese whisky entering the US market – it looks like we are getting even more. I was truly surprised to find out that there will be two single cask bottlings of Karuizawa available here this year through K&L Wines based in California. The now silent Karuizawa has become the Port Ellen of Japanese whiskies when it comes to the fervent demand for the precious few bottles that are released. The two spirits buyers at K&L, David Driscoll and David Othinen-Girard, worked hard and managed to secure a cask from 1981 bottled at 62.9% ABV and another from 1999 bottled at 58.3% ABV. As expected for Karuizawa both casks are Sherry Butts. It is also anticipated that these bottles will come wrapped in the ever-popular Noh series labels. Given that bottles of Karuizawa are selling out in literally seconds in Japan, I am thankful that these bottles will be available here in the US – maybe I’ll have a better chance at being able to buy a bottle.

K&L Wines has been issued the recently legislated license that allows shops to sample spirits for both their Redwood City and San Francisco stores. There are a lot of detailed rules that go along with this license, but the one us consumers probably thingk is the most important is that the samples are FREE!
There are competing tastings this evening from 5pm to 6:30pm. Redwood City will be sampling St. George and San Francisco will be sampling AD Rattray. A few more details can be found here.
Not familiar with Japanese whisky? Tonight is a great opportunity to try some at a very low price. K&L Wine’s weekly San Francisco tasting is tonight at Gitane (6 Claude Lane) at 5:30. Suntory Brand Ambassador Neyah White will be hosting and pouring Hibiki 12 – a delightful whisky partially aged in Japanese plumb wine casks. Hope to see you there – chris
Edit: well it appears I got my dates wrong. Apologies. It is actually tomorrow (June 30) so you have an extra day to make it!
The recently inaugurated SF tasting is stepping out of the whisky world momentarily to drop into the world of Vermouth and Amaro. This is not the only change, the location will be at the San Francisco K&L store located at 638 4th Street starting at 5pm. The timing is perfect for me as I am just finishing up Boozehound by Jason Wilson (thanks Dai for the recommendation) that discusses both Vermouth and Amaro. So having almost know familiarity with these spirits I am pretty excited about trying them – especially for $5. For the full list and details of what is being sampled check out the Spirits Journal post.
We have posted about the great K&L tastings – at cost – that have been going on in Redwood City. Now finally we in San Francisco can join in on the fun without jumping on the freeway or risking getting fired for leaving work early every Tuesday! The San Francisco tastings will be on Thursdays. More details of the San Francisco tastings are here.
As mentioned before, K&L Wines has tastings at Martin’s West in Redwood City every Tuesday (tonight!). You can get a pour of great, often limited, expressions of whisky at cost. This week it is the recently awarded “World’s Best Single Malt Whisky” by Whisky Magazine Suntory Yamazaki 1984. This is a spendy bottle to say the least checking in at ~$600/bottle. So this is your chance to give it a try at ~$20/pour. More specifics are here.
K&L Wines here in California has their third barrel of Four Roses in stock now. Read more about it here on their Spirits Journal Blog.
As impossible as it might seem, K&L Wines and David Driscoll along with Martin’s West is doing just that. In another innovative move, they will be selling pours at cost. It appears that this will be a weekly event – every Tuesday. This coming Tuesday will be the first and they are offering Glenfiddich’s limited release Snow Phoenix. You can read more details about the event here. We did a quick review of the Snow Phoenix and at $3/pour, get down there and try it out!
